[928] EDWARD NEEDHAM LOVITT
CA 1750/60 - 1845

[929] From the "Journal of North Carolina Genealogy" by William Perry Johnson, Editor,
Summer 1966, Vol. XII, No. 46, pp 1663 and 1670

[930] Some say the Lovitts arrived in America, possibly by way of Canada, and settled
in Nova Scotia. This remains to be discovered. The original spelling and
pronunciation of LoVette is French--the first syllable "LO" pronounced with a
long O, the last five letters in the second syllable pronounced "vay" long A.
All too often for it to be coincidental, correspondents have stated, "We have
been told by family members our Lovett line originated in France". Further
confirmation of French ancestry is the olive complexion, black hair, and dark
eyes. There are strong indications of connections with the Cherokee Indians, as
will be related, that would account for the dark features but certainly not the
name. The question has been raised whether EDWARD LOVITT'S wife was Indian, also
Cherokee. This was not an unusual situation as many Frenchmen migrating from
Canada into America during the Colonial days did marry Indian women.
Thus far the earliest record found shows an EDWARD LOVIT had settled, by 1780,
in Dobbs County, North Carolina and remained there until after 1790. Dobbs
County was formed in 1758 from Johnston. By 1791, Dobbs County was abolished,
having been divided into four other counties: Wayne--1779, Jones--1788, Lenoir
and Glasgow--1791. Glasgow's name changed to Greene County in 1799.

LOVIT, EDWARD 1 male over 16 (Edward)
2 males under 16 (#2 and #3 sons)
3 free females (wife, #4 dau, and ANNA
Researchers have been unsuccessful in locating this family in an 1800 census or
tax list or proof indicating who were Edward's wife, #2-son, #3-son, and
From 1790 to 1804, Edward's whereabouts are unknown, but believed him to be the
same man found in Knox County, KY tax records of 1805 and 1806. Also, on March
26, 1808, EDWARD LOVETT paid taxes on land; on July 10, 1808 EDMUND LOVET paid
taxes on land; on July 10, 1808, *NATHANIEL LOVET paid tax on one horse.
*This is the only early record of a Nathaniel Lovet who would be at least 21
years old and fits the age category of either son.
A careful study of records indicates the possibility of EDWARD LOVITT having
married at least twice. If so, the older children by a previous marriage did not
relocate (at least for any length of time) in Kentucky.
U.S.FEDERAL CENSUS - 1810 KNOX COUNTY, KENTUCKY Page 650
EDWARD LOVITT 1 male 45 and over (EDWARD)
1 male 16 - 26 (JONATHAN)
1 male 10 - 16 (EDOM)
1 female 45 and over (wife)
1 female 10 - 16 (CELIA)
1 female under 10 (Jemima Permelia)
The 1810 Knox County Census show the Lovitts living next door to the WILSON
OLIVER family whose wife is ANNA CHARITY, daughter of Edward Lovitt.
From Knox County in 1818, Whitley County is created where Edward pays taxes
beginning in the year 1819 on "Wolf Creek" water course, living there until his
death in 1845. He is listed in 1830 and 1840 Whitley County census with his wife
and son, Jonathon who remained in the household with both his parents until
their deaths.
In Union College Library at Barbourville, KY is an unpublished manuscript by
Elmer Mercer which includes a list of Knox County Revolutionary Veterans from
Virginia, North Carolina, and other states. Among those named, EDWARD LOVITT.
Mr. Mercer did not give sources; just stated most of them from Eastern Virginia,
the Eastern Carolinas, and Maryland. All were over 45 years of age in 1810.
A descendant of Edward Lovitt has stated, "I was told by my grandfather, that
Edward Lovitt served in the Revolutinary War under General Francis Marion.
General Marion, also known as "Old Swampfox", took his troops through the swamps
of South Carolina, where numerous battles and surprise attacks were fought. They
marched from South Carolina into North Carolina. If Edward Lovitt's
Revolutionary War Records could be located, there would possibly be valuable
information to further aid the search.

[94] 1850 Census for Collin County, TX lists Pleasant's family as three daughters.

[95] Pleasant was first of family in Texas, first records show he was here in
1841. He came with Dr. William E. Throckmorton, who was the first settler
in Collin County. It seems Pleasant was a hunter and kept the camp supplied
with meat and fish from a nearby creek. This story is told of his adventures.
On one hunting trip, he was being chased by a bear, and climbed the first
available tree, but found that the tree had an occupant, a panther which the
bear had already chased up the tree. Pleasant received 320 acres of land
in Collin County, as he was a widower.
